Is it recommended to export simulation results back to MS Project?

This depends on the objectives for running the analysis? There are a few issues with exporting the results back to MSP that you need to consider:

1. When you open the xml file, if you try import into an existing file, it could overwrite data not directly associated with the simulation results such as custom columns notes etc. We recommend that you import into a new project file rather than an existing one, to avoid the possibility unintentionally of overwriting data.
2. Estimates typically are judgements of the most likely durations ,effort, calendar dates of activities. When you export the results to MSP via xml there is not option to select a risk adjusted most likely. Commonly, users will select , Base results which are the Mean or average for each activity, which will put add an “buffer” to each activity without explicitly stating this.

Because of these issues we recommend caution when exporting results back to MS Project. It can be a useful tool when used correctly, but it should not be performed without first considering why you want the results in MS Project.
